Instructor: Elizabeth Hoksbergen
February 21/22 (Fri/Sat) 8:00 am – 4:30 pm
$40 PEI member, $60 non-member · 1 licensure renewal credit.
This course will analyze phonological processing, phonemic awareness, orthographic processing, rapid naming (word retrieval abilities), and morphological awareness as well as their critical connection to the acquisition of language and literacy skills. Moreover, course coverage will illuminate the essential elements fundamental to multi-sensory, structured literacy curricula: phonology, sound-symbol association, syllable instruction, morphology, syntax, and semantics. Emphasis during the course will include how to identify and teach phoneme types, graphemes, the six syllable types (and their exceptions), syllable division, syllable marking, and morphemes. Through demonstration and practice, teachers will learn to identify and mark all of the six syllable types of the English language. Additionally, participants will examine key components of effective structured literacy instruction, including diagnostic-prescriptive decision-making; systematic coverage; direct, explicit instruction with modeling; and cumulative review. Participants will learn the inextricable link between these concepts and reading comprehension as well as how to apply this content to their particular instructional context.
1 licensure renewal credit.
