June 19-20 – Applied Improvisation in the Classroom – with Joe Van Haecke

June 19, 2023 @ 8:00 am - June 20, 2023 @ 4:30 pm

IN PERSON ONLY – Monday, June 19 and Tuesday, June 20 (8:00am – 4:30pm)

Improvisation is the performance art of adapting to random situations, thinking on your feet, and problem solving with others. Applied Improvisation uses the tenets of improvisation to bring those skills into the workforce, classroom, and everyday life. It provides a set of tools to participants, where students and teachers alike grow their social and emotional intelligence. Additionally, for the trauma-informed classroom, these skills provide teachers and students a means to remain in control of a situation.

This workshop will introduce you to the activities improvisors use to learn and practice the art of improv. Not only will you develop and practice those same skills, you’ll also learn activities you can adapt for your content area and use in your classroom!

Course Objectives

  • Understand the underlying principles of “yes, and…”
  • Gain confidence reacting to any situation
  • Expand active listening skills
  • Learn how to “slow down to go fast”
  • Recognize and apply status moves
  • Acquire additional classroom management ideas
  • Learn activities to use for classroom engagement
  • Accept failure as a step toward success
  • Learn to take brave, bold, big risks
  • Be comfortable in the uncomfortable
  • Develop skills to deescalate situations and help students regulate themselves
