PEI License Renewal Credit Class Half Price Awards  – Up to $1000 Available

Apply now!  PEIF is offering half price scholarships for educators attending PEI Professional Development Classes. These scholarships are intended to help classroom teachers expand their professional skills and knowledge in areas of ethics, classroom management, dyslexia, leadership, financial literacy, and STEM.

To apply for a scholarship, please submit a paragraph to info@peiowa.org describing the workshop you wish to attend and the direct benefits you expect this opportunity to bring to you and to your students.

Scholarship awards will be applied directly to the Professional Development class specified in the application (limit one per person per year).

Human Trafficking in our Schools

This course will provide awareness, education, and resources for educators to recognize and appropriately respond to trafficking scenarios they may encounter in the schools and communities in which they serve.
Through lecture, video, facilitated discussions and a survivor testimony, those attending will learn:
• Human trafficking – what it is and what it’s not
• How to educate through a trauma-informed lens
• How to create protocol when a student discloses
• How to educate other educators and students, using available curriculum on:
o Facts vs. Myths
o Common Vulnerabilities
o Social Media and Other Grooming Techniques
o Pornography’s Link to Trafficking
o Healthy Relationships & Value
o Empathy & Responsibility

Course Objectives
Each participant will come away able to articulate:
• What human trafficking is – and isn’t, with specific examples related to the education system
• What constitutes a “trafficker,” and the role of a “groomer”
• Vulnerabilities that “groomers” target
• Common social media techniques used by “groomers”
• A trauma-informed approach to students who have disclosed or may be at-risk
• Ways to create protocol for students disclosing instances of trafficking
• Empathy for survivors whose stories will be shared
• Available curriculums for educators and students related to the topics above, including content focused on practical definitions for “valuable” and “healthy” relationships, as a preventative measure against underage human trafficking
• Additional resources for educators

Participant Evaluation for Licensure Renewal Credit
To pass the course for license renewal credit, the participant will complete the following:
1. Engage in discussions and all in-course activities through individual and/or collaborative work
2. Complete all in-course activities through individual and/or collaborative work
Complete the Shaywitz article activity for the second day of class

$60 PEI member, $100 non-member – 1 licensure renewal credit.

 Minimum enrollment of 10 required.  Maximum enrollment of 30.

Cancellations due to low class enrollment, full refund will be issued
Student initiated cancellation 72 hours prior to course, $10 cancellation fee
Student initiated cancellation less than 72 hours prior to course, non-refundable
